Dev Log #3 (Sep.26 - Oct.2)
Our team has elaborated on the main mechanics of our game:
1. 2D vs. 3D Sketchbook: The game connects a 2D sketchbook with a surreal 3D environment through stickers. Players use the sketchbook to influence the 3D world, with colour changes and alterations affecting their surroundings.
2. Stickers: Players manipulate the sketchbook using 2D stickers collected through solving puzzles and interactions with NPCs. Placing these stickers creates corresponding 3D objects in the game world, affecting the environment and enhancing exploration. This mechanic will deepens engagement with the narrative.
3. Area Locks: We blends linear storytelling with exploration using 'area locks' and a sticker mechanic. Solving puzzles reward players with stickers to unlock new area. For example, cutting out a bridge sticker from a newspaper allows players to cross gaps, enhancing immersion and encouraging problem-solving as they discover the artist's memories.
We are thinking to set what we built in our tech demo as the tutorial level of our game. The idea of the tutorial level is to get the player familiar with the whole game world and the ways to interact with the environment. The tutorial level happened before the player entered the carnival, after complete the tutorial puzzles, the player can enter the carnival and starting exploring.
Except the tutorial level, we are going to implement a total of 2 pages of the sketchbook with e puzzles in each page. The first puzzle happens when the player first enter the carnival, there will be a fountain puzzle. Next will be a booth puzzle. The second page of the sketchbook will have circus puzzle and finally the ferris wheels puzzle. The background of the carnival is set to be a sunset skyeline.
Our team have discussed and agreed to have 3 puzzles done before the Alpha Presentation. After voting for the puzzles idea and we decided to have :
1. Find specific NPCs with special outfit and interact to get stickers.
2. Capture specific photos around the carnival to get stickers.
3. Fix the switch of a ride to get it working again.
What we have do this week are mainly polishing the tech demo including enable gaming console to control the character as well as enhance the dialogue system and adding colour restoration. The art team is working on modelling the whole carnival background and the first NPC - little crying girl and the key item - little bunny also the sketchbook.
